May 2008 Letter from the Editor

May is here and I can say I am ready for this long-awaited break!  I love coaching and this was a successful season for my team but I need a break…and I am sure there are many others out there feeling the same way!

While we don’t necessarily get a long break at my school (planning and auditions for the fall have already begun) I do get a little hiatus from regular rehearsals.  A rifle clinic here, a budget meeting there, but mostly time to spend the evenings with my family enjoying the beautiful spring weather…and time to focus on developing this site and writing new articles during the summer months!

This month’s updates include featured articles on recruitment and auditions as well as a few ideas for award certificates.  We’ll be adding new content this month as well with a few articles I’m excited to finish!  We’ll be reviewing the new “Airblade” by Band Shoppe and speaking with several instructors for our Q&A section.  I’m also looking for instructors to contribute to our “Quick Tips” and “Documents” sections.

One of the most exciting events I’m looking forward to is the Komen National Race for the Cure which we are participating in with Team WGC: Colorguard Spin for the Cure June 7th!  May is our last push for recruitment and fundraising.  I’m so excited to spend the morning walking with other members of the colorguard community.  If you’re in our area please consider walking with us and helping us reach our goal of 20 participants walking in the race. It will be a nice morning to network with other guard coaches and make a difference! (Thanks to Cheer Factor, Inc who will award the first 5 instructors who raise over $250.00 a free directors warm-up kit!) If you’re not in the area please consider supporting Team WGC. Check out the new article on the home page about how my mom, long time guard mom and supporter, is using her talents to raise money for this important cause!

Finally, I’m excited to announce that Color Guard Educators AND Colorguard Spin for the Cure are both on Facebook!  If you have a facebook account please join our groups to network with other Color Guard Educators!

I wish you all a relaxing summer season (unless of course you’re headed off to drum corps and then I wish you a successful and exciting summer season!).  I hope you all take a chance to visit a local drum corps show for some wonderful inspiration (  And if you find some free time in the next couple months please consider sharing something you learned this year with other coaches or visiting our forum and helping out someone who has a question.  After all, this site was founded as a place where coaches support coaches through sharing experiences and ideas!  Thanks for all of your input so far!
