Check out this article submitted by the Director of the “State of Illusion” winterguard from Michigan. She shares how-to instructions for adorable “autograph pillows” she makes as gifts for her performers.
At various times I’ve used this craft as both a team building activity early in the season and a year-end activity for Championships.
- Topper fabric
- White cotton or muslin
- Polyfil stuffing
- Ribbon, bows, puffy paint, etc for decorating topper
Cut an 8” x 12” piece each of the topper fabric, batting and white cotton (or muslin). Here’s where your creativity comes in. Time to decorate the topper! I have an embroidery machine, so I embroidered the toppers on this year’s pillows. But decorating can easily be done with puffy paints, bows, ribbons, buttons…the possibilities are endless!
Once decorated (and paint is dry), layer in this order (bottom to top): batting, white fabric, topper (wrong side out). Stitch 3 sides together. Turn right side out. Stuff with polyfil stuffing, making sure the polyfil is in between the topper and the batting (not in between the batting and the white fabric). When stuffed to desired density, stitch (or glue) remaining side together. I provide a mini Sharpie with the pillow. Collect autographs on the white side. Enjoy!
